Ederson can’t wait for City adventure to start

Brazilian goalkeeper Ederson is champing at the bit to get his Manchester City career underway.

The 22-year-old will become a City player on 1 July after agreeing a contract with the Blues and will join up with Pep Guardiola’s squad after the summer break.

He admits he was aware of City’s interest, initially in the Portuguese press, before hearing officially from the Club.

“It's been in the newspapers and the media for a while,” said Ederson. “When I knew, it was real, that City were really interested in me, I was very happy because it's good to see your work recognized.

“I like everything about Manchester City. This is a great club, the league they have here in England and they have amazing fans and they play splendid football. I have always had the dream to play in English football and now I'm going to make it true.

“With Pep Guardiola, City are growing more and more. He is putting in place a young team for the future. Those were important factors in making my decision.

“Manchester City has an amazing squad. I think they managed to have a good season. Next season, we will have to be focused to achieve the goal of winning trophies.”

Ederson admits he is a fan of the Premier League but expects it be very different from the Portuguese top flight.

He believes the intensity, mentality, stadiums and fans sets English football apart from other countries.

“I have always watched it on TV,” he said. “My impression is that it is a very intense game, box-to-box. The grounds are always full and the stadiums are nice. This is a very captivating football. The competition here would motivate any player. I'm ready, I'm always ready.

“Here the matches are amazing, no matter who the opponent is, the games are always very close. Most of the games are decided by a small margin. That shows the intensity and the competitiveness of the English league.

“Everyone knows here the competition is ferocious. It's a bit different than the Portuguese league. But I'm going to try to adapt to this league as quick as possible.”

Speaking of his temperament and playing style, he said: “To be a goalkeeper you must be a little bit crazy! We have the courage to put our head where the players put their feet. I have that, of course. I'm a quiet goalkeeper and I always try to transmit confidence and calm to my teammates. That skill I have helps a lot.

At Benfica I also played a little bit more advanced and I was involved a lot in the game. I think that revolution in the way goalkeepers get involved in the game was very important. I already had that skill to play outside the box.

“When I played for a team lower down, I didn't have the chance to play far from the goal, I had to stay close to it. But when I went to Benfica, I was able to improve what I knew and play further out getting more involved in the games, being more active. I have been developing that since.”

And with three fellow Brazilians on the City squad, Ederson says he is expecting to settle into City life quickly next season.

“I have already had the chance to play with Fernandinho in the national team,” he said. “I also have played alongside Gabriel Jesus; I knew him from the team that went to the Olympics. Them being here is going to be very important for my adaptation. They will help me settle.

“I also played with Bernardo Silva when he was at Benfica. He already stood out and he was a great player, a born number 10. Unfortunately, he didn't have the chance to play in the first team and ended up following his own path. I'm very happy for everything he's done and for being my new team-mate.

“As for my ambitions with City, I want to win the Premier League and the Champions League. Those are my two main goals in this shirt.”
